The ankle knock Yann Kermorgant picked up in training sidelined him, allowing Ricardo Fuller to make his first start for the club.
Lawrie Wilson continued at right-back with Solly on the left and Evina confined to the bench. Salim Kerkar was on the left of midfield with Jackson moving inside to partner Stephens. Hollands was on the bench and there were welcome returns for Danny Haynes and Scott Wagstaff amongst the subs.
The Addicks looked better balanced going forward and carved out some good chances in the opening period. The Tractor Boys had one or two opportunities but it was the visitors who looked the more likely to make the breakthrough.
The goal action was shoe horned into nine minutes early in the second half. First, Fuller played Green in but his cross was missed by Wright-Phillips. The ball ran to Kerkar on the left and his hard, low cross was smashed home by Johnnie Jackson from close range. For the second time in four days, Charlton scored twice in three minutes. After 51 minutes, Fuller disposessed a defender, advanced into the area to fire across Scott Loach and double the visitors’ advantage.
Ipswich pulled a goal back six minutes later when a routine Jason Scotland shot took a huge deflection off Michael Morrison to wrong foot Hamer.
The Addicks continued to hold the upper hand though and looked quite comfortable. There were no real scares and Powell will be pleased with the way his side saw the game out.
The near thousand travelling fans taunted Paul Jewell with chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning.’ It was the third defeat in a row for the Tractor Boys and their disgruntled fans booed them off at the end.
Based on this performance, Jewell’s team are in for a long, hard season.
